Clonakilty Agricultural College Centenary Celebrations 1905-2005,
August 27 2005

One hundred years ago this year Clonakilty Agricultural College opened its doors to provide agricultural training for young people entering farming or agri-business.

Over the years the College has contributed enormously to the adoption of practices, products and ideas to improve farm incomes.

Up to the early 70’s the College provided the foundation training for progression onto Third Level Dairy Science Diploma and Degree Courses. This training attracted students from all over Ireland. They have contributed so magnificently to the development of rural Ireland through the co-operative movement.

The College was also innovative in cattle, sheep, pig and poultry breeding and provided much sought after bulls, rams and boars to the farming community. It was also the heart of crop development and crop trials by the Dept. of Agriculture for many years. In more recent times the College in partnership with Cork Institute of Technology provides courses that allows progression to qualification in Farm Management and the Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture.

Saturday, August 27th has been earmarked as a day to celebrate the contribution made by the College over the last 100 years. A College committee headed by J.J. Harty College Principal is working hard to ensure the success of the day. This committee includes past principals, past and present college staff; Dr. David O’ Connor, David Collins, Donal Mullane, Michael Nunan, Gerry O’Callaghan, John Verling and James Moloney, Mary Scanlan, Patrick Hennessy, John Murphy, John Kehoe, Patricia O''Regan, Denis Calnan and Mary O’Driscoll.

The Committee would welcome any photographs or articles associated with the College over the years. All memorabilia will be returned safely to contributors.
The clonakiltyagriculturalcollege.com website already gives some flavour of the celebrations.

All past pupils, friends from near and far, neighbours and members of the farming, agri-business community are therefore invited to this celebration, which will consist of a vintage display, old time threshing, with West Cork Leader holding their annual Food Fair at the College to celebrate its centenary. This will be followed by a Service in Darrara Church and dinner dance and social evening at the College. Admission to the Dinner Dance is by ticket only which can be obtained from the office at Clonakilty Agricultural College.
